Vikings unable to chase down Greyhounds

ASHVILLE — Once Grove City broke through in the second quarter, Teays Valley struggled to get back in the game as the Greyhounds left Ashville with a 42-14 win Friday.

After a defensive first quarter where each team turned the ball over and first downs were hard to come by, Grove City was able to break through.

GC senior quarterback Carson Welsh led all Division I QBs last season in passing yards and touchdowns and had a solid start at being tops in those departments again as he threw TD passes of 47, 30 and 7 yards in the second quarter to put the Greyhounds up 21-0 at halftime.

A successful onside kick to start the second half set up a scoring drive for GC that ended with a Blaike Jackson seven-yard run and a 28-0 lead.

The Vikings answered with a 68-yard scoring drive of their own that was keyed by a 25-yard run from Peter Graham and saw Graham finish it off with a 4-yard scoring run.

The Greyhounds added a 57-yard scoring run from Johnson before the quarter ended to lead 35-7

TV’s second score came from an 80-yard drive that finished with Evan Maynard scoring from 10 yards out.

Jackson had one more TD run for GC to round out the game’s scoring.

After gaining only 84 yards in the first half, the Vikings came back to finish with 329 yards of offense Friday.

Kaden Hines threw for 162 yards hitting 15 of 24 passes as he led the TV offense in the second half. Brady Farmer took the snaps in the first half and was 4-13 for 50 yards.

Graham was TV’s top receiver with five catches for 78 yards with Cavin McDowell catching four for 58 and Carson Payne grabbing five for 38.

Graham also was TV’s leading rusher with 78 yards on nine carries.

The Vikings are home again Friday hosting former Mid-State Leage rival Bloom-Carroll (1-0).
