Vikings shut out Canal; Braves fall in nine

No. 2 Teays Valley 9, No. 10 Canal Winchester 0

ASHVILLE — Teays Valley is headed back to the district finals after a 9-0 win over Canal Winchester Tuesday.

Marleigh Adkins got the Vikings on the board with a two-run home run in the second. 

After a couple of walks and a stolen base, a fielder’s choice and a ground out drove in two more runs to give TV a 4-0 lead. 

TV added three more in the fifth. 

Rylan Writsel connected on a solo shot to center. With two outs, Sophia Hastler reached on an error to score a run, and Sydney Brumfield added an RBI-double to make TV’s lead 7-0. 

Writsel drove in another run on a groundout in the sixth followed by an RBI-single from Brae Ferrell to cap the game’s scoring. 

Marleigh Adkins started in the circle and went six innings. She gave up two hits, walked one and struck out five. Ellie Powell struck out the side in the seventh to close out the game. 

Teays Valley heads to Olentangy Saturday to take on No. 3 Mt. Vernon. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.

Southeast District, Division IV
No. 6 Gallia Academy 14, No. 2 Logan Elm 12 (9 innings)

LOGAN — The teams ran out of daylight Monday and had to return to Logan Tuesday afternoon before Gallia Academy ended Logan Elm’s season 14-12 in nine innings. 

The team combined for six home runs on Monday as the game was tied 12-12 through seven innings when play was suspended. 

Gallia Academy had four of those home runs while the Braves benefited from a three-run home run by Ryleigh Wolfe in the third and a three-run shot from Lucy Caplinger in the sixth. 

After Caplinger’s shot, the Braves were up 12-11. 

The Blue Angels got a runner on with two outs in the seventh, followed by a single where the lead runner advanced to third and the batter took second on the throw. With an open base, an intentional walk was issued but the next batter was hit by a pitch to force in a run and tie the game. 

Coming back on Tuesday, the Braves put together a threat in the bottom of the eighth.

Morgan Arnold led off with a single and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt. Kimberly Petty came on as a courtesy runner and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Lucy Caplinger walked and an intentional walk was issued to Vannah Binkley to load the bases. But a popup to first base and a fly ball to right brought the inning to an end. 

Gallia opened the ninth with a single from Taylor Wilcoxen who took second and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a walk, a groundout brought in Wilcoxen. 

A two-out single to right off the bat of Leigha Kingery brought in another run before Kingery was thrown out to end the inning as she was trying to take second. 

Peyton Richendollar led off the bottom of the ninth with a single but a fielder’s choice and two fly outs brought LE’s season to an end. 

Sadie Binkley pitched eight innings for the Braves. She struck out eight, walked four and gave up six earned runs. Richendollar pitched a scoreless ninth with one strikeout.

The Braves wrap up their season with an 18-9 record. 

Gallia Academy will see if it can keep its run going when the Angels take on No. 8 Waverly on Thursday for a district title.
