Horsley’s new career mark sends Vikings past Lions

When it comes to writing down the career-high in single game points for Alyssa Horsley, it’s best to do it in pencil.

That way you can quickly erase the old mark and insert the new number.

It took Horsley just eight days to set a new career standard for herself by scoring 33 points on Tuesday in helping lead Teays Valley to a 65-51 Mid-State League Buckeye Division win over host Liberty Union.

“Liberty Union played a zone to protect the paint and try to limit Kennedy Younkin’s touches, but it really didn’t matter because Alyssa really took off and had another impressive shooting display for us,” Teays Valley coach Trevor Younkin said.

Horsley had previously set her career-high in single game points last Monday with 31 in a win over Northland.

The Vikings outscored the Lions 16-10 in the second quarter to take a 31-25 halftime lead.

Horsley drained a pair of three-pointers during the quarter and scored 10 points, while Cooper McManaway hit a three-pointer of her own and Younkin scored three points.

The Vikings expanded their lead with a 20-point outburst coming out of intermission.

Horsley drained three-pointers four and five for the night on her way to 14 points in the quarter, helping the Vikings expand their lead to 51-38.

“Alyssa just caught fire and was determined to hit open outside shots,” Younkin said. “Alyssa found the gaps within their zone and made sure we came out on top.”

Five players scored in the fourth quarter for the Vikings, paced by Younkin contributing six points and Kayla Cline connecting on a triple.

Abbie Riddle had 19 points, 15 of which came in the first half, to pace the Lions (2-7, 1-6)

“We switched up defenses in the third quarter and that finally allowed us to pull away,” Younkin said.

Younkin finished the night with 13 points, and Cline and Gabrielle Watkins added five apiece.

The Vikings (7-2, 6-1) host Big Walnut on Dec. 28 in the second game of the Jeff Sheets Classic. Newark and Worthington Kilbourne meet in the first game, which is slated to tip at 6 p.m.
