Vandegrift strikes out 16 batters to propel Vikings past Aces

Teays Valley grabbed the lead to stay in its half of the fourth inning on Monday en route to a 5-1 Mid-State League Buckeye Division win over visiting Amanda-Clearcreek.


Hayden Wells singled to left with one out, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a two-out single to left off the bat of Landon Vandegrift.


Matt Farmer followed with a single to left and advanced to second when Vandegrift went first-to-third. Jeremiah Fabbro followed with by grounding an 0-2 pitch into center that chased home both runners and gave the Vikings a 3-1 lead.


The Vikings tacked on two insurance runs in the fifth.


Vandegrift went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored, Fabbro singled and drove in a pair and Trevor Hamilton singled, drove in a run and scored for the Vikings.


Gary Kemmerling recorded the lone hit for the Aces and Bryton Carruthers scored their run.


Vandegrift tossed six innings, walked four batters and struck out 16 to earn the win for the Vikings (3-0, 2-0) who host future Ohio Capital Conference Buckeye Division rival Canal Winchester on Tuesday for a non-league game.


The Aces (1-3, 0-1) continue league play on Wednesday when they host Hamilton Township.
