Dumm helps Mustangs to sectional final win over Lions

Olivia Dumm struck out 13 batters and also drove in four runs for good measure on Thursday, helping Westfall defeat host Fairfield 9-4 in a Division III Southeast District sectional final.

Dumm scattered six hits over a complete game effort. The Westfall senior right-hander allowed four runs, two earned, walked a batter and struck out 13 in her 130-pitch outing, 94 of which were thrown for strikes.

She also 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBI and a run scored.

Senior catcher Makayla Cook led the 12-hit attack for the Mustangs by going 3-for-4, Delana Landefeld was 2-for-3 with two RBI and scored and Madison Kearney contributed a 2-for-3 evening and scored twice.

Cook led off the second by lining a single to center and courtesy runner Logan McNeal eventually came around to score on a passed ball to put the Mustangs ahead 1-0.

Kearney singled to center with one out in the third and scored when Landefeld lined a triple to left.

The Mustangs (15-10) continued to play add on in the fourth when Cook singled to right to lead off the inning and McNeal eventually came around to score on another passed ball.

Fairfield (11-9) reached the scoreboard with two runs in its half of the fourth, but the Mustangs immediately responded in the fifth with four runs.

Grace Long whacked a double to left and Kearney joined her on the base pads when she reached on an error. Landefeld then legged out an infield single to knock in Long.

After a fielder’s choice hit into by Ava Heath took Kearney off the base pads and a double steal, Dumm lined a single to left to score both Landefeld and Heath.

Dumm advanced to third on a double to left off the bat of Cook and scored when Gabby Henry singled to right to put Westfall ahead 7-2.

Westfall scored two more runs in the sixth, while Fairfield scored once in the sixth and again in the seventh.

The Mustangs advance to a district semifinal against second-seeded Portsmouth West, a 2-0 winner over Nelsonville-York tonight, on Tuesday at Unioto. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
