Camden McDanel opened his stay on Monday at the Under-20 World Freestyle Championships with a pair of dominating performances at the Princess Sumaya Lounge in Amman, Jordan.
The recent Teays Valley graduate scored a technical fall win of 12-1 over Japan’s Toyoki Hamada and then registered another technical fall, this time by a 12-2 score, against Poland’s Taron Shahinyan.
McDanel then suffered his first loss on the mat in 2023 when he dropped a 5-1 decision to Iran’s Abolfazi Babaloo in a semifinal match at 97 kilograms (approximately 214 pounds).
The Nebraska signee is slated to be one of two Americans who will wrestle for a bronze medal on Tuesday, while three of McDanel’s teammates will vie for the gold.
