Camden McDanel bounced back from his first loss during the 2023 calendar year in winning fashion to secure a bronze medal on Tuesday at the U20 World Freestyle Championships held in Amman, Jordan.
After falling 5-1 on Monday to Iran’s Abolfazl Babaloo in a semifinal match at 97 kilograms (approximately 214 pounds), McDanel faced Kazakhstan’s Kamil Kurugliyev for the third-place final inside the Princess Sumaya Lounge.

McDanel finished off a single leg takedown to jump out to a 2-0 advantage. After Kurugliyev tied the match at 2-2, McDanel rallied with a shot to regain the lead.
During the final 38 seconds, the Nebraska signee spun behind the Kazakhstan grappler for a counter takedown and tacked on another takedown to close out the 8-2 decision.
Overall, McDanel went 3-1 at the World Championships. He started his run in the Jordanian capital with a pair of technical fall wins on Monday over Japan’s Toyoki Hamada and Poland’s Taron Shahinyan by a combined score of 24-3.
The Teays Valley graduate adds a bronze medal to an impressive resume for the year that includes a Pan-American championship, U20 Freestyle World Team Trials champion, U20 Freestyle Nationals champion and Ohio state champion.
