More than two dozen area athletes have taken the first step toward the state championships by qualifying for this week’s regionals after finishing in the top four at the various district meets held last week.
Leading the way are the Circleville girls who qualified athletes in 11 events while winning their second district championship in three years.
Southeast District Division II
WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE — Circleville’s girls racked up 122.5 points to win the Southeast District Division II track and field championship.
McClain was second with 91 points while Unioto was third with 80. Logan Elm took eighth with 37 points and Westfall was 10th with 14.
Faith Yancey led the way for the Tigers as she won her third straight titles in the 100 meters and 200 meters. Her winning time of 12.36 seconds in the 100 meters was a new Southeast District record.
She ran with Ellie Patrick, Maddux Bigam and Bella Morningstar to win the 4×400-meter relay.
Yancey joined with Sydney Lattimer, Isabelle Perini and Makya Cockerham to take second in the 4×100-meter relay.
Circleville’s 4×800-meter relay squad of Bigam, Morningstar, Patrick and Aly Hatfield won that event in 10:04.43 – nearly 15 seconds faster than second-place Unioto.
The 4×200-meter relay team of Josie Randle, Kaylin Mankin, Perini and Morningstar qualified with a third-place finish.
Bigam won the 1,600 meters in 5:22.68 with Hatfield fourth at 5:46.13.
Westfall’s Caitlyn Shipley was second in the 800 meters in 2:22.30 while Bigam was third in 2:22.95 and Patrick was fourth in 2:25.41.
Logan Elm’s Claire King won the district pole vault clearing 9’ 4” while Circleville’s Emma Groff was third at 8’ 6”.
Morningstar won the 400 meters for the Tigers.
Lattimer was second in the long jump and Cora Wilson was second in the 100-meter hurdles for Circleville
Zane Trace won the title in the boys’ meet with 105 points while Wheelersburg took second with 104. Logan Elm was seventh with 47 points, Westfall was ninth with 11 and Circleville was 12th with 14 points.
Keegan Kidd led the way for Logan Elm as he won the 800 meters in 1:57.26. Westfall’s Josh Trapp was third in 1:58.59.
Westfall’s Brody Williams claimed the title in the 400 meters.
Logan Elm’s boys advanced their 4×800-meter relay team that finished second.
Owen Russell earned two spots at the regional for the Braves as he finished third in the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters.
LE’s Alden Williams advanced in the long jump as he finished third.
Westfall’s 4×400-meter relay team took third to move on.
Ed Kirk was the lone athlete from Circleville’s boys’ squad to move on as he finished third in the high jump clearing 5’ 8”.
The Braves, Mustangs and Tigers who finished in the top four will be competing in the regional championships at Muskingum University in New Concord on Tuesday and Saturday.
Central District Division I
WESTERVILLE — Teays Valley qualified four girls and three boys to the regional championships.
Leading the way for the Vikings was Katy Zang who win the 3,200 meters 11:23.52.
High jumper Brooklyn Herbert was second with a height of 5’ 3”.
Two Vikings qualified in the discus as Madison Burriss was third with a throw of 104’ 4” and Sophia Seymour was fourth with a throw of 103’ 3”.
Lancaster won the meet with a team score of 109 while St. Francis DeSales was second with 100 points. Teays Valley was eighth with 40 points.
In the boys’ championships, hurdler Drew Moore moved on in two events. He was fourth in the 100-meter hurdles and took third in the 300-meter race.
Tristian Graham was second in the discus with a throw of 153’ 8”.
Jackson Perry third took third in the pole vault clearing 12’ 4”.
Westerville North won the district title with 147 points and Westerville Central was second with 90.5. Teays Valley was ninth with 24.5 points.
The Vikings will be competing at the regional championships hosted by Pickerington High School North on Tuesday and Friday.
Central District Division II
WESTERVILLE — Amanda-Clearcreek’s girls were able to move a couple of runners on to the regional championships.
Emma Kern placed fourth in the 800 meters to earn a spot in the regional meet.
AC’s 4×400-meter relay team also took fourth place to move on.
The AC boys were unable to qualify anyone to the regional meet.
Buckeye Valley and Johnstown Monroe shared the district title for the girls with 81 points each. The Aces were 12thwith 23 points.
Jonathan Alder won the boys’ title with 112 points and Buckeye Valley was second with 80. The Aces were 12th with 13.5 points.
The Aces will be competing at the regional meet at Lexington High School on Tuesday and Saturday.
