Eleven locals earn spot in state meet

Eleven Pickaway County athletes have extended their school year by a week as they have earned a spot in the state track and field championships at Dayton’s Welcome Stadium Friday and Saturday. 

Circleville’s girls lead the way with seven participants making the Division II championships, including senior Faith Yancey who is making her third trip and going in three events. 

Teays Valley’s girls have two athletes in the Division I championships with Logan Elm and Westfall each advancing one boy in Division II. 

Division II

NEW CONCORD — Circleville’s Faith Yancey leads the way for the group of athletes heading to the state championships in Division II from Pickaway County. 

The senior is making her third trip and has qualified in three events. 

A two-time state placer in the 200-meter dash, Yancey took third at the regional in the 200 to secure a return trip. 

Yancey joined with Sydney Lattimer, Isabelle Perini and Makya Cockerham to take third in the 400-meter relay and qualify for Dayton.

In the final event of Saturday’s regional at Muskingum University, Ellie Patrick, Maddux Bigam, Bella Morningstar and Yancey were second in the 1,600-meter relay to advance. 

They will be competing Friday in the running prelims with 400-meter relay at 10:30 a.m., the 200 meters at noon and the 1,600-meter relay at 12:20 p.m.

Lattimer will be back later that afternoon as she took third in the long jump at the regional to qualify in that event and will be competing at 1 p.m. Friday in the long jump final. 

On the boys’ side, Logan Elm’s Alden Williams was the regional runner-up in the long jump and will head to Dayton where the boys’ long jump finals will be held at 9 a.m. Friday. 

Westfall’s Josh Trapp placed third in the 800 meters at the regional and earned a spot at the state meet. He will compete in the 800-meter finals at 11:20 a.m. on Saturday. 

Fairfield Union claimed the regional team titles for the boys and the girls. 

For the girls, the Falcons had 72 points with John Glenn second with 57.5 points. Circleville had 38 points to place fifth as a team. Logan Elm and Westfall tied for 33rd with two team points each.

Fairfield Union’s boys had 54 points to win that side of the regional with Steubenville second with 48 and Zane Trace third with 40. Logan Elm had eight team points to place 28th and Westfall had six points for 30th

Division I

PICKERINGTON — Teays Valley’s girls’ track team has two ladies advancing to the state tournament. 

Katy Zeng will be competing in the 3,200 meters at the state meet after finishing fourth at the regional held at Pickerington High School North.

Her finish earned her a spot in the state championships Saturday at 5 p.m. in the University of Dayton’s Welcome Stadium. 

TV’s Katy Herbert earned an at-large spot at the state meet. Herbert was fifth in the high jump at the Pickerington regional and grabbed one of the two berths for the top performances outside of the top four at one the regional meets. She will compete at 10 a.m. Saturday in Dayton.
