ASHVILLE — A big fourth quarter lifted Teays Valley to a 21-14 win over Groveport-Madison Friday night.
The Vikings had managed only four first downs and 55 yards through three quarters of action and were trailing 14-6.
Getting the ball back a minute into the final quarter, the Vikings put together a nine-play drive that covered 75 yards. Six of those plays were runs by Carson Payne. The ninth play was an eight-yard pass from Brady Farmer to Payne that closed the gap to 14-12 with 7:30 left.
Farmer then connected with Bryce Ferrell on the PAT to tie the game at 14-14.

The Cruisers were able to muster only one first down on their ensuing possession. With a strong rain coming down, Groveport’s punter had trouble handling the snap and ended up scrambling, which gave the ball back to the Vikings at the Cruisers’ 40-yard line with 5:26 left.
TV mounted another nine-play drive that saw Payne carry the ball eight times. The last carry was a three-yard TD run with 1:24 left. Maxwell Spencer’s PAT kick made it 21-14.
GM’s final possession saw the Cruisers get two yards on a first-down pass and then two incompletions. On fourth down, GM had a motion penalty, then an offensive pass interference call wiped out a first down and the possession came to end when TV’s Cavin McDowell knocked down a pass attempt to give his team the ball back with 20 seconds on the clock.

Both teams struggled in the early going.
While it was dry, there was a strong wind that limited options.
The Cruisers went three-and-out on their first three possessions. With Groveport punting into the wind, the Vikings had good field position each time.
Despite not being able to muster a first down themselves, the Vikings got 37-yard and 39-yard field goals from Spencer for a 6-0 lead. A 53-yard attempt late in the quarter was tipped.
Midway through the second quarter, Groveport put a drive together.
Eleven running plays with an incomplete pass mixed in saw the Cruisers cover 67 yards. Jalen Joyce ran it in the final three and the PAT kick made it 7-6 a minute before halftime.
The first-half wind resulted in only five passes attempted in the first half with no completions. Precipitation came with a minute left in the first half and stuck around the rest of the game with several periods of heavy rain.
After only 33 yards of offense in the first half, the Vikings ended the night with 185 yards.
Payne carried the ball 33 times for 149 yards. He also caught the only pass completed by the Vikings
Groveport finished the night with 232 yards of offense.
Raishad King led GM with 129 yards on the ground on 23 carries.
After an 0-3 first half, Baker Bowden wound up 5-12 passing for 65 yards.
The Vikings (5-1, 3-0) host Canal Winchester (4-2, 2-1) next week.
