Circleville 43, Fairfield Union 37

LANCASTER — After falling on their home court nine days ago, Circleville was able to return the favor when the Tigers traveled to Fairfield Union Saturday and defeated the Falcons 43-37.

“I’m proud of the toughness our guys showed tonight on the road at Fairfield Union. That is always a tough place to play, and our guys battled all night,” Circleville coach Evan Callihan said. “Fairfield Union just beat us several days ago so we wanted to turn the tide and come out on the right side tonight.

“Kole Nungester made some big plays for us throughout the game. There were several moments tonight where the game could have gone either way and he made big plays for us on the offensive end of the floor.

“(Senior) Drew Thornsley played one of the best games of his career tonight for us. He made big plays on both ends of the floor,” Callihan added. “He has been starting to gain confidence on the offensive end of the floor and he had a big and one for us when the game was tied to lift us to a three-point lead.”

The Tigers finished the first quarter up 15-11 and free throws were the preferred method of scoring in the second as the teams struggled to score. The half ended with CHS up 19-18.

The Falcons were able to take a 30-29 lead into the final period.

Nungester led the Tigers with 14 points, Thornsley and Riley Jenkins each had eight, Ed Kirk six, Blain Fowler four and Jack Kline had three.

“I’m proud of our guys and how the responded throughout the night,” Callihan said. “We’ve talked about how February is a big month of basketball, and we have a lot of games coming up. We just have to take each game one at a time and continue to focus on our approach and focus on the things we can control, which is our attitude, toughness and togetherness.”

The Tigers (11-7, 8-4) have four regular season games remaining, starting with a trip to Hillsboro Monday.
