Braves on top at MSL championships

LANCASTER — Logan Elm had five wrestlers claim individual titles on the way to besting the 10-team field at the Mid-State League championships Friday night.

LE had wrestlers in 13 of the 14 weight classes and all 13 placed as the Braves piled up 88 team points while Bloom-Carroll was second with 54.

It is the first league title for the Braves since the 2018-19 season.

Amanda-Clearcreek was fourth with 34 points and Circleville was sixth with 23.

Logan Elm had nine wrestlers in the title matches Friday night at Fairfield Union.

“We figured we had the ability to be in those matches as long as we wrestled well,” Logan Elm coach Jake Daniels said. “We came out and wrestled tough. We had some tight matches in the finals, but that’s where you want to put yourself, you want those tough matches.

“I’m proud of them. They worked hard this week and battled through some adversity with sickness.”

Logan Elm’s Gavin Hoover won a 10-3 decision against Bloom-Carroll’s Ayden Johns to win the 132-pound weight class and he was named the MSL’s Most Valuable Wrestler. (see more photos from the championships)

Leading the way for the Braves was senior Gavin Hoover who improved to 39-1 on the season by winning the 132-pound title and was named the tournament’s most valuable wrestler.

“Gavin does what Gavin does. He’s one of the hardest workers, if not the hardest worker, in the room and the results speak for him,” Daniels said. “He had a tough matchup against that tough freshman from Bloom (Ayden Johns).

“I’m proud of Gavin and he deserves it.”

Hoover beat Johns (30-4) 10-3 in the finals and won his semifinal by technical fall (18-0) over Amanda-Clearcreek’s Braylon Hinton.

Hoover wraps up his time in the MSL as a four-time champion having won the 120-pound title as a freshman and winning the 126-pound weight class as a sophomore and a junior.

Fellow LE senior Dawsen Hudson (40-2) claimed his third MSL title as he won the 113-pound weight class when AC’s Reese Marshall (23-3) had to forfeit the title match. Both had advanced to the finals with first-round pins in the semifinals.

Hudson also won the 113-pound title last season and won at 106 pounds as a sophomore.

Amanda-Clearcreek junior Bodie Martin won his third MSL title Friday night. (see more photos from the championships)

David Little (30-14) advanced with a pair of pins before winning a 14-10 decision to win the 138-pound title for LE.

LE senior Hunter Schoenborn (25-10) had a pair of opening minute pins and took the 175-pound title with a 10-0 major decision.

After advancing with a pair of pins, LE senior Bryce Perkins (29-12) went to a tiebreaker period to win the title at 190 pounds 5-2.

Amanda-Clearcreek had two wrestlers win titles led by junior Bodie Martin.

Martin (34-0) stayed unbeaten on the season and unbeaten in MSL action by recording three technical falls to win the 150-pound weight class. He also won the 150-pound title as a sophomore and won at 144 pounds as a freshman.

AC sophomore Silas Hoffman (29-6) won the 165-pound championship.

Sophomore Caihden Morgan (26-6) pinned his way to the heavyweight title as Circleville’s lone individual champion. He pinned Logan Elm’s Conner Green (28-7) in 3:34 to take the title.

While several of the teams are in tournament action Saturday (Logan Elm travels to Wellston and Circleville is scheduled to be at River Valley), it will be two weeks before they all head to sectional tournaments.

“We’ve got next week off which is good to kind of go back to basics,” Daniels said. “We’ll go into sectionals with the mindset of trying to finish as high as possible to set yourself up for districts.”

Amanda-Clearcreek will be at the Central District Division III sectional at (Morral) Ridgedale High School Feb. 21 and 22.

Circleville and Logan Elm, along with Fairfield Union, will be at the Southeast District Division II sectional at Gallia Academy High School Feb. 22.
