LE’s Arledge, Wolfe win district; move on to state championships

ATHENS — Maddox Arledge and Mason Wolfe didn’t drop a set in winning the Southeast District Division II tennis tournament Monday at Ohio University.

The senior/junior duo came into the tournament as the top seed after winning the sectional title last week and opened with a match against Kade Glockner and Alex Reeder from Minford in which they posted a 6-0, 6-2 win.

In the second round, it was a matchup of four Braves as Arledge and Wolfe went up against teammates Zach Speas and Grey Braun.

Speas and Braun had won their opening match 6-2, 7-5 over Griffin Meyer and Braeden Tally from Athens.

Arledge and Wolfe prevailed 6-3, 6-0 to advance to the district championship against Waverly’s Sam Walsh and Cade Carroll.

The Braves’ duo held off Walsh and Carroll to win the first set 7-5 and then won a spot in the state championships with a 6-3 win in the second set.

Circleville’s Reid Seimetz and Will Flory also competed at the district tournament and lost their opening match 6-0, 6-1 to Ironton’s Payton Justice and Judah Barnes.

In the singles tournament, Jackson’s Landon Smith won the championship and a berth in the state tournament.

Arledge and Wolfe will join 15 of the other top doubles teams from around the state as they compete for the state title on Thursday and Friday next week at the College of Wooster.
