Wilson places 14th in discus, Westfall relay 13th fastest

COLUMBUS — The high school track and field championships began Friday morning at the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium with a couple area athletes in action. 

Logan Elm’s Maggie Wilson wrapped up her career placing 14th in the state for Division II in the discus and Westfall’s 1,600-meter relay team had the 13th fastest time in its Division II preliminary.

Wilson was the first thrower in the discus Friday morning and had her best distance with that initial attempt. The senior posted a throw of 117’ 1” and followed up with 110’ 10” and 111’ 5”.

Junior Michaela Stork from Port Clinton claimed the state title. Stork had won her regional with a throw of 138’ 11” and came out of the gate Friday with 140’ 1”. She followed that up with the winning distance of 150’ 6”.

Ella Hochstetler from Wheelersburg took second when her final attempt traveled 139’ 2” and South Point’s Savannah Perego threw 137’ 4” to take third. 

In the 1,600-meter relay, Westfall’s Brody Williams, Quinn Eberly, Tyler Yates and Josh Trapp placed sixth in their heat of the championship preliminaries with a time of 3:26.48. That was the 13th fastest time amongst the 18 competitors with the fastest nine making Saturday’s finals. 

Wheelersburg had the fastest qualifying time of 3:21.69. 

The ninth and final qualifying spot went to Brookville at 3:24.59.

While not running with the relay team, Trapp will be competing Saturday at the state meet in the 800 meters. 

• Fairfield Union senior Christian Thompson won the Division II high jump by clearing 5’ 8”.

• Zane Trace sophomore Hudson Williams tied for second in the pole vault in clearing 14’ 10”. Grant Harrison of New Richmond won the event with a height of 16’ 7”.
