All four county schools have athletes heading to Columbus at the end of the week to compete in the state track and field championships.
Circleville’s Sydney Lattimer is the only one heading north as a district champion.
The senior won the long jump over the weekend at the Division II regional held at Muskingum University. She had a winning jump of 17’ 9.25” to take the title with Waverly’s Paige O’Bryant second at 17’ 5.5”.
Lattimer has the third best qualifying distance amongst the 18 who will be competing this weekend at Ohio State’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Her event begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
Teays Valley junior Katy Zang makes a return trip to the state championships after placing third in the 3,200 meters in the Division I regional held at Austintown Fitch High School. She ran the eight laps in 10:45.01. Her time is fourth best amongst the 18 qualifiers.
Zang runs at 6:20 p.m. Saturday.
Westfall senior Josh Trapp will make his third appearance at the state meet this weekend.
Trapp joins Quinn Eberly, Brody Williams and Tyler Yates as part of the 1,600-meter relay team. The group took second in Saturday’s Division II regional at Muskingum with a time of 3:24.15. Indian Valley took the top spot in 3:22.04.
The Mustangs have the eighth-fastest time among qualifiers and will be race in the prelims at 4:10 Friday looking to advance to Saturday’s finals.
In the 800m, Trapp finished fifth Saturday with only the top four finishers guaranteed a spot in the state championships. But his time of 1:56.87 was the fastest in the state amongst those not receiving one of the automatic berths earning him one of the two at-large spots. He has the 12th overall fastest time among the 18 competitors in the race slated for a 2:30 p.m. start Saturday.
Logan Elm’s Maggie Wilson will be in action Friday morning at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium after she grabbed the final qualifying spot at the Muskingum regional. The senior placed fourth with a throw of 118-2. That improved on her league-winning throw of 116’ two weeks ago and her throw of 116’ 6” that got her second at the district last weekend.
The discus competition will take place at 9:30 a.m. Friday.
