Vikings ground Cardinals in opener

A trio of pitchers combined to check host St. Charles to four hits and struck out seven batters in leading Teays Valley to a 7-1 non-league win on Saturday to open the season.

Matthew Farmer earned the win by tossing five innings and allowing two hits, an unearned run and striking out five batters.

Hayden Wells and Landon Vandegrift each pitched a scoreless frame and struck out a batter.

The Vikings scored a pair of runs in their first at-bat of the season to grab a 2-0 lead.

Ben France worked a walk and scored two outs later when Ivan Smith lined a 3-1 offering for a double.
Smith advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a single off the bat of Vandegrift.

The Vikings extended their lead to 3-0 in the third when Hamilton reached on an infield single to open the inning, advanced to second on a single to left courtesy of Vandegrift and scored on a dropped third strike and subsequent throwing error.

Vandegrift paced the Vikings by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored and Smith was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and run scored.

The Vikings (1-0) continue non-league play on Wednesday with a trip to future Ohio Capital Conference Buckeye Division foe Newark.
