TV’s Zang wins OCC; CHS’ Bigam second at MSL; Unioto on top at SVC

Leagues across the state held their cross country championships this weekend. 

Highlights of the weekend included Teays Valley’s Katy Zang claiming her first Ohio Capital Conference championship, Circleville’s Maddux Bigam taking second at the Mid-State League meet, Fairfield Union’s boys posting a perfect score in the MSL and Unioto’s boys taking the top four spots to win the Scioto Valley Conference title. 

Mid-State League Buckeye Division

CARROLL — Fairfield Union took the top five spots to post a perfect score of 15 to claim the Mid-State League title Saturday and FU’s girls had three in the top five on the way taking the title.

Andrew Walton, Christian Rekindle, Connor Runkle, Nathan Phillips and Cordel Runkle were the first five to cross the finish line at Bloom-Carroll Saturday to get the Falcons their 15 points.

Only a sixth-place showing from Bloom-Carroll’s Johan Ness kept FU from sweeping the race as the Falcons’ Andrew Ray was seventh and Ryan Boyer was eighth.

BC was second with 65 points. Logan Elm was fourth and Circleville sixth. Amanda-Clearcreek did not have enough runners for a team score.

Logan Elm’s Owen Russell was ninth in 17:26.29.

In the girls’ meet, FU had a team score of 26 with BC second with 59. Logan Elm took third. Neither Amanda-Clearcreek nor Circleville had enough runners for team score.

FU’s Vera Henderly won the girls title as she ran the 5,000 meters in 19:55.50. Circleville’s Maddux Bigam was second with a time of 20:24.00.

Logan Elm’s Evelyn Sykes finished sixth with a time of 21:36.20.

Ohio Capital Conference Buckeye Division

WESTERVILLE — Teays Valley’s Katy Zang was 30 seconds better than her closest competitor in winning the OCC meet Saturday at Westerville North.

The junior ran the 5,000-meter course in 17:14.65 while Lancaster’s Marisa Heil was second in 17:44.91. 

TV sophomore Reese Galinger finished fourth in 19:15.38.

Lancaster took five of the top eight spots to win the team championship with a score of 26. Teays Valley placed four runners in the top 14 as the Vikings finished second with a score of 51.

Lancaster took five of the top 13 spots to win the boys title with a score of 33. Pickerington Central was second with a score of 56. Teays Valley was sixth with a score of 175.

Lancaster’s Brock Jarrett won the race in 16:24.16 and Canal Winchester’s Grant Hamilton was second in 16:29.88.

Junior Brayden Fraley was the top finisher for TV as he came in 25th in 18:26.87.

Scioto Valley Conference

CHILLICOTHE — Unioto had all seven of its runners finish in the top 10 to win the boys title at the SVC championships at Huntington High School Saturday. 

In the girls meet, the Shermans placed four in the top 10 in taking the title.

Unioto’s boys had a score of 16. Zane Trace was second with 85 and Westfall was third with 91.

Unioto’s William Lynch won the race in 16:41.80.

The Unioto girls had a score of 33 with Adena second at 54. Westfall was fourth with 77.

Adena’s Vanessa Conley was the individual champion with a time of 21:18.20.
