Tigers finish second in sectional action

The Mid-State League Buckeye Division had a strong showing on Tuesday by claiming the top two spots in a Division II Southeast District sectional held at Jaycees Golf Course outside of Chillicothe.

Fairfield Union topped the 16-school field with 319, followed by Circleville (338), Sheridan (345), Unioto (349) and Warren (360) also advancing to next week’s district tournament.

The Falcons turned in a spectacular showing by placing four golfers in the top six with their best round of the season, led by co-sectional medalist Ty Fisher with 77. He shared the honors with Unioto’s Charlie Lewis.

Sophomore Reid Seimetz shot a 40 on the front and also on the back nine to finish with an 80 for the Tigers. Avery Ferrell finished strong with a 41 o the back nine to post an 84, Garrett Brooks turned in an 86 and Michael Fernandez fired 88. Liam McConnell also played for the Tigers and shot 110.

“I am really proud of my guys today,” Circleville coach Luke McConnell said. “There was a couple of times where we struggled a bit and were able to grind it out and recover mentally after a bad hole.

“This is the time of year when you have to dig deep sometimes to bring it back and today, we had a couple of guys that did a great job of that. We are excited to get back to the districts again and hopefully we can put one all together.”

Logan Elm finished four strokes behind Warren in sixth but did advance a pair of golfers as individuals. Grant Cline shot a 41 on the front nine on his way to an 85 and Graham Williams turned in an 87.

Will Higginbotham tallied 89 and Judson Pollock fired 103. Also playing for the Braves was CJ Jones with 109.

Westfall finished in 12th with a team score of 382.

Jasiah Story had 94 and was followed by Isaac Stevens (95), Jacob Hicks (96) and Dalton Bush (97). Senior Brian Schobeloch also played for the Mustangs and shot 122.

Qualifying teams and individuals return to the links on Oct. 5 for a district tournament at Crown Hill Golf Club. The district champion and district runner-up qualify for the state tournament, along with the top two individuals not on a qualifying team.
